This surgery replaces a shoulder joint severely damaged by injury or diseasewith an artificial joint made of metal and special plastic. It is performed when conservative treatment has not worked or when an extensive tearmakes arthroscopic surgery difficult.
When the rotator cuff is also damaged, reverse shoulder replacement is performed.Reverse shoulder replacement gives up on rotator cuff tendons that no longer workand lets the deltoid muscle take over their role.Although it is considered a last-resort surgery, it can help relieve pain and improve function.
End-stage degenerative or rheumatoid arthritis
Secondary arthritis caused by infection or injury
Congenital joint disorders or impaired joint movement
Tumors or fractures around the joint
Anesthesia is given, the patient is positioned for surgery and the skin is disinfected.
The skin is incised and the joint opened; the worn joint surfaces are removed and the artificial joint is inserted. (*Bone cement may be used to fix the implant to the bone.)
After checking the alignment and stability of the joint, the joint, subcutaneous tissue and skin are closed in layers to complete the surgery.
