Epidural steroid injection, widely known in Korea as a "nerve injection" or "bone injection," is a treatment that reduces pain by injecting steroid medication locally into the epidural space of the lumbar spine. It is most effective for low back pain, numbness and radiating pain caused by nerve compression from a herniated disc or by spinal stenosis. It can also help with acute pain, and herniated discs in young people in particular can often be treated with epidural injections alone, without surgery. However, because the medication is not delivered directly to the damaged nerve, the effect may not be immediate. When nerve compression is severe, the treatment may be limited, with no effect or an effect that lasts only a few days. Recently, fluoroscopy and ultrasound equipment have made the treatment more accurate and safe.
