Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the carpal tunnel, a small passage at the front of the wrist, becomes narrow.
The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel; when the narrowed tunnel compresses this nerve, symptoms such as numbness in the wrist appear.
Numbness and burning pain in the fingers and palm
Reduced motor function and abnormal sensation due to hand numbness
If symptoms persist, reduced sensation on the thumb side and weakness or wasting of the thumb muscles
Awkward wrist movement with signs of motor paralysis
Phalen's Test
Press the backs of both hands together as shown in the photo and hold for about 20 seconds.
If the tingling pain gets worse, carpal tunnel syndrome may be suspected.
