CARTISTEM, also called knee stem cell therapy or knee stem cell surgery, uses
allogeneic umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells: stem cells taken from placental blood
are cultured and surgically implanted into areas of knee osteoarthritis or cartilage defects
to induce cartilage regeneration.
Arthritis in the knee joint or severely worn cartilage
Knee cartilage damaged by aging or external impact
Ongoing pain despite previous treatment for cartilage damage
Reluctance to undergo joint replacement surgery
Either general or spinal anesthesia is given.
Using an arthroscope, many small holes of about 3–5 mm are made in the area of the cartilage defect.
CARTISTEM (cultured stem cells) is placed into the holes, and the activated stem cells help regenerate the cartilage.
Before Surgery (X-ray)
After Surgery (X-ray)
Pain may continue for up to 6 months.
Because the tissue regenerates during recovery, rehabilitation is especially important.
