Exercise and rehabilitation therapy to prevent residual pain and recurrence after spine surgery.
Most patients who have had spine surgery complain of residual pain and tightness in the lower back, known as "post-operative pain syndrome." This happens because of damage to the tissues and muscles around the spine during surgery. Muscles that have become weak and stiff after surgery reduce the function of the spinal muscles and joints, and in severe cases disc degeneration can develop at other levels. To prevent this residual pain and the recurrence of disc problems, exercise therapy and rehabilitation after spine surgery are essential.
